TO DO: ALPHABETS AND BIRTHDAYS was written
in 1940 as a children’s book. It was not published until 1957, as part of a compilation of unpublished writings, and it has never been published as an illustrated edition (which is what Stein originally envisioned). Yale University Press asked me to do just that.
I made 26 paintings, one for each letter of the alphabet to illustrate stein’s dreamlike writing. It will be released this may to coincide with a traveling exhibit of the Stein art collection to be at san francisco museum of modern art, Grand Palais, Paris and the metropolitan in new york.
